The app uses an intelligent placement algorithm that tries to fit as many words as possible into each grid. It starts with the longest words and works down, finding intersecting letters to create a connected crossword. Words that can't be placed are automatically moved to the next puzzle.
Crossword Puzzle Maker supports four grid sizes: 10x10 (beginner, 10-15 words), 12x12 (casual, 15-20 words), 15x15 (standard newspaper size, 20-30 words), and 19x19 (Sunday-sized challenge, 30-45 words). Choose the size that best fits your target audience and difficulty level.
You can import over 100 words and clues at once. The app automatically distributes them across multiple puzzles based on your chosen grid size. Words that don't fit in one puzzle overflow to the next, ensuring all your content is used.
Words and clues should be entered as pairs, with each word followed by its clue. For bulk import, use one word-clue pair per line, separated by a comma or tab. For example: "PYTHON, A popular programming language" or "OCEAN, Large body of salt water".
The app supports all standard Amazon KDP trim sizes for puzzle books, including popular options like 5.5" x 8.5", 6" x 9", 7" x 10", 8" x 10", and 8.5" x 11". Margins are automatically calculated based on your selected trim size and page count.
Export your book as a PDF Print at 300 DPI from Canva for the best quality. The app generates pages with KDP-compliant margins, so your PDF will be ready to upload directly to Amazon KDP or use with Canva Print.
